SANGRIA

SANGRIA

After completely overestimating our carrying ability for the Otter Trail, we were left with a 5l papsak of red wine and one of two options:
decant the completely unclassy papsak into a completely classy decanter and serve to unsuspecting friends at a dinner party (for this option, be sure to mention the nose and the bouquet and the balance to throw them further off the trail), or
make a sangria
This week I decided to do the latter and it was a massive success – much more delicious than I ever though red wine, brandy and oranges could be. This is definitely a recipe to repeat, and despite being red wine – a refreshing summer drink.

Ingredients:

Makes enough for 8 – 10 people (a couple of tumblers each)

1.5l red wine (2 bottles – or just measure from that papsak!)
250ml brandy
250ml freshly squeezed orange juice
250ml soda water
4 tablespoons sugar
2 oranges
2 lemons
2 apples
Lots of ice
Directions

  1. Slice the lemons and oranges and cube the apples, set aside
  2. In a large bowl (at least 3.5l) mix together the wine, oranges, and brandy. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
  3. Add the fruit and refrigerate for at least an hour.
  4. Add the soda water and serve with plenty of ice.
