February 22, 2020

Where do you go to when you need some motivation; a boost to keep you going when a day gets tough? Or perhaps you simply need to know that it’s worth taking a chance in life because eventually, it all DOES work out.

Famous South Africans are a great source of inspiration for us all – those that have gone on to leave a legacy through their achievements. Whether they still live in the country or travelled to make their mark elsewhere, their insight on life is relevant in many scenarios. But the motivation does not have to end in South Africa! You can easily find more quotes by famous people from any country or walk of life!

Nelson Mandela

We’ll waste no time in sharing words of one of the most motivational human beings ever to walk this earth: Nelson Mandela. As a president, he transformed a country and as a person, he inspired the world.

From him, one of the most impactful quotes would always be “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Photo by John-Paul Henry on Unsplash

Do you sometimes lose sleep when feeling torn between different options? Perhaps you think logic must always trump emotions when it comes to business. And when it comes to family, you may lean towards the heart?

If you’re unsure how to act in a scenario, heed Mandela’s advice and motivation that both do matter. Find the balance between the two and that could be the key to your success.

Elon Musk

Now, let’s jump to the present, with one of the biggest names in tech. If it is business you need some motivation for, you can’t go wrong in looking to Elon Musk for some assistance.

When picking your heroes, it’s important to pick the ones that make motivated living a lifestyle, not a once-off. Few lives show this more clearly than Elon Musk. He was motivated to generate innovative ideas when he was still at school and despite multiple failures over the years, he kept going. Today he can be proud of the many inventions, projects and brands that can be coupled to his name:

  • PayPal
  • Tesla
  • SpaceX
  • OpenAI

So, what will this gentleman from Pretoria tell you if you were to ask him for a pep talk?

It’s difficult to pick, but when it comes to business, you’ll probably enjoy the following two:

  • “When Henry Ford made cheap, reliable cars, people said, ‘Nah, what’s wrong with a horse?’ That was a huge bet he made, and it worked.” So, don’t be afraid to be original.
  • “When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favour.” If Elon changed the industry and even how we operate in the modern world—think PayPal—why can’t you?

JRR Tolkien

Did you even know that the brilliant mind behind the famous Lord of the Rings books and movies originally came from beautiful South Africa? He left SA at an early age, but one would like to think that the impressive wildlife and scenery added to his creativity later on in life.

For the creatives out there, his words “It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish” that may serve you best. If you need the motivation to put those first words on paper or paint on a canvas: do it as soon as possible.

“It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish”

Zozibini Tunzi

And of course, you sometimes have to listen to a lady as well. There are Charlize Theron and models like Candice Swanepoel to listen to of course. But we picked the most recent member of the world-famous South African group: Zozibini Tunzi.

Despite not fitting the traditional mold of ‘beauty queen’, this young lady earned the crown of Miss Universe in 2019.

Her quote reflects the importance of never backing down. You determine where you end up in life and if a girl from the Eastern Cape can change what beauty queens are expected to look like, imagine what you can achieve.

‘Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself.’

Zozibini Tunzi

Without those who went before us, we’ll take much longer to reach our own destinations. So, take the wisdom and grab hold of the motivation that these famous individuals from SA can offer you.
